Online metronome

Set the tempo, press Start and play. From 30 to 300 BPM, with an accented downbeat, subdivisions and tap tempo to find the BPM of a song.

Keyboard shortcuts: space starts and stops, T taps the tempo, the arrow keys move it up and down by one.

Which tempo to choose

The Italian markings on a score are a guide, not a rule; these are their usual ranges:

MarkingApprox. BPM
Largo40–60
Adagio66–76
Andante76–108
Moderato108–120
Allegro120–156
Vivace156–176
Presto168–200

To learn a hard passage, start 20% below the target tempo, play it three times in a row without mistakes and go up 4 BPM at a time. It feels slower than practising at tempo, and gets there sooner.

How to find the BPM of a song

Press Tap tempo (or the T key) along with the beat, at least four times. The metronome averages the last eight taps and jumps to that tempo. Pause for more than two seconds and it starts counting again.

Why it does not drift

Every click is scheduled ahead of time on the browser’s audio clock, not with a page timer. That keeps the beat steady even when the tab is busy, which is where simple web metronomes usually stumble.

Sound Tools, the app

The app’s metronome keeps playing with the screen locked, saves your songs in setlists, has eight sounds and taps the beat on your wrist on Apple Watch. Free, no account.

Frequently asked questions

What tempo range does it cover?

30 to 300 BPM, the same as the Sound Tools app’s metronome. Type the number, use the slider or the arrow keys.

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Press “Tap tempo” or the T key in time with the song, at least four times. The metronome averages the taps and switches to that tempo.

Can I use 3/4, 6/8 or subdivisions?

Yes: choose 1 to 12 beats per bar and subdivide into eighths, triplets or sixteenths. The downbeat is accented. For 6/8, use 2 beats with triplet subdivision.

Does it keep playing with the screen locked?

In a browser that depends on the system: many phones pause web audio when the screen locks. The Sound Tools app does keep playing with the screen locked, on iPhone and Android.

Is there a metronome for Apple Watch?

Yes: Sound Tools has an Apple Watch metronome that works without the iPhone and taps the beat on your wrist — handy in loud rehearsals.
